Class 3 have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with two professional musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra for six weekly sessions, which culminated in a magnificent concert for the whole school on 1st July. Our school was chosen to take part in the project as only one of four schools throughout the whole of London!

The children worked with the two musicians – Dave who plays the cello and Paul who plays the clarinet and bass clarinet, on a piece of music that they first heard played at one of the concerts that they attended in June at the Royal Festival Hall. The music was based on the story of ‘Billy the Kid’ and the children, with the help of Dave and Paul, composed their own music using both pitched and un-pitched musical instruments.

In the concert at school, the children used narration and their instruments to compose trotting music to represent Billy’s horse, as well as music to express how Billy felt at different points in the story.

Lewisham Music Hub Gala Concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Wednesday 1st July 2015Logo_image copy

29 members of our choir sang in a very special concert. In a packed auditorium, sixteen schools from the LB Lewisham took part by singing four fantastic songs, most of them with three or four harmony parts. The sound when all of the children were singing was truly amazing! In addition to the singing, we were treated to many other groups of musicians including a steel pan band, a brass band, a woodwind band conducted by our own clarinet teacher Sam Becker, a string orchestra and much more. What a wealth of musical talent there is in Lewisham!!Although the concert finished later than scheduled and the children were very hot and tired by the time it ended, they all behaved beautifully throughout and they were a credit to our school! This is the first time that we have ever been invited to sing at the Royal Festival Hall and it was certainly a very memorable evening for all concerned.
